floating:
when a substance has a density less than that of the liquid , then the substance will float.
ex- density of water is 1g/cm3, when a piece of wood falls in the water whose density is 0.50g/cm3 it will float on it.
sinking:
substances whose density is more than that of the liquid they will sink
ex- the iron needle sinks into water because the density of water is 1g/cm3 and iron needle is 7g/cm3 thus the needle tends to sink in.
