The differences between linear editing and non-linear editing are :
- Analog editing tools are used in linear editing (film, magnetic tape, etc). These formats use linear tracks for the recording and dubbing (transfer) of audio and video.
- Digital editing is mainly referred to as non-linear. Media is computerized and saved as files in this format. Some early non-linear editors merged digital and analog technology.
- Utilizing the tape roles, linear editing was performed. The final product was created by cutting and sewing together negatives in order to eliminate the NG shots (not good shots). Editing used to take a lot of time. With the digitization of content, this is no longer done.
- Video editing software is used for non-linear editing. High-end editing systems like Avid, Smoke, etc. are used for movies.
