Answer: A nation-state is a state formed by and focused on a well defined nation. Poland is almost exclusively made up of Poles so it qualifies as a ‘nation-state’. Similarly, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Ireland, Iceland, Denmark are essentially homogeneous states and are thus; nation-states.

There are many states that think of themselves as ‘nation-states’ that are not homogeneous and have significant populations of other ‘nations’. One such state is Spain. Spain has two very important nationalities which consider themselves distinct from the Spanish and are reluctant to be immersed into the Spanish nation-state, these two ‘nations’ are the Basques and the Catalans. The latter is actively attempting to secede and the former has had violent confrontations for a long time.

France also has subsidiary populations outside the classical French culture- the Bretons and the Alsatians. Belgium is perhaps the most conspicuous example of a non-nation/state. Belgium has two populations, Dutch speaking Flemings and French speaking Walloons- that barely speak to each other.
