There is some difference between the news reel and news bulletin. A newsreel is a form of short documentary film prevalent in the first half of the twentieth century, regularly released in a public presentation place and containing filmed news stories and items of topical interest. It was a source of news, current affairs, and entertainment for millions of moviegoers until television supplanted its role in the 1950s. News bulletin is a short radio or television broadcast of news reports or on the other hand a brief account or statement, as of news or events, issued for the information of the public.

- A news bulletin is any update on the news.
- A newsreel is a short film depicting recent events. Newsreels were shown in movie theaters before the main feature. They weren't as timely as daily newspapers or radio, but in the era before television, they were the only medium that provided moving pictures of current events.
- As television became more popular, fewer companies made newsreels. Universal Newsreel and Hearst Metrotone were the last major companies to make them; both stopped in 1967.
