Octet means presence of a total of 8 electrons in its valence shell while in case of duplet only 2 electrons are present in valence shell.

Answer:

Duplet contains 2 electrons

octet contains 8 electrons

Explanation:

Duplet:

  • Having 2 electrons in the outermost
  • Shell K shell (if outermost) is called duplet

example - Helium(He)

  • Duplet rule: If valence shell is in first orbit (or K orbit), it has maximum of 2 electrons i.e. He.

Octet:

  • Having 8 electrons in the outermost .
  • Shell except He is called octet i.e. Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, Rn.
  • Octet rule: An atom can have maximum of 8 electrons in valence shell.
