Differentiate between regeneration and fibrosis

Regeneration is the restoration of the tissue to its original cellular and extracellular structure. There are only 2 organs in humans that regenerate following injury: bone and liver. It is not clear how much “stem cells” are involved in the process. At least in bone, many of the cells involved are “osteoprogenitor” cells which, at best, are unipotent stem cells. Sometimes they are referred to as “quiescent osteoblasts”.

Repair is the formation of scar tissue. Scar tissue is not identical to any tissue in the body. However, it does fill the damaged tissue and allows some functionality.
