Rough endoplasmic reticulum has ribosomes on it's surface whereas SER smooth surface. RER with the help of ribosomes produce proteins for DNA synthesis.

Membrane biogenesis is the process by which cell membranes are synthesized with the aid of lipids and proteins.

The RER helps in providing proteins for this process.
