Rough endoplasmic reticulum looks rough under a microscope
because it has particles called ribosomes attached to its surface and smooth
endoplasmic reticulum does not have ribosomes attached to it.
It helps in the manufacture of fat molecules or lipids which is important for cell function. Some of these proteins and lipids help in building of the cell membrane.
