A colloid is a dispersion of solid / liquid in a liquid in which the particles are so small that they do not settle out. As a result of Brownian motion the particles do not settle out. It is hard to draw a line between a colloidal "solution" and a suspension of nanoparticles.

Suspensions and colloids are heterogeneous mixtures. A suspension is identifiable because its particles are large and settle out of the dispersing medium due to the effects of gravity. The dispersed particles of a colloid are intermediate in size between those of a solution and a suspension.
A solution is always transparent, light passes through with no scattering from solute particles which are molecule in size. The solution is homogeneous and does not settle out. A solution cannot be filtered but can be separated using the process of distillation. A suspension is cloudy and heterogeneous.
