Differentiate between the following pairs of terms:
(a) Protoplasm and cytoplasm​

Protoplasm is the content of the cell including the cell membrane, cytoplasm and the cell nucleus whereas cytoplasm is the jelly like substance surrounding the nucleus within the cell membrane. The cytoplasm contains the cell organelles like mitochondria, ribosomes etc.

  • it is the total living substance of a cell, that is , the cytoplasm and the nucleus.
  • it has been described as a translucent fluid somewhat colorless, greyish or brownish.

Cytoplasm

  • it is a semi liquid substance. It occupies most part of the cell within the cell membrane.
  • under a microscope it appears to be colorless, partly transparent and somewhat watery.
