Jataka tales are in Khuddaka Nikāya section of Sutta Pitaka part of the Tripitaka. However, the Jatakas in Tripitaka will contain only the brief summary of tales. The full stories in Jataka tales will be kept in a commentary of Tripitaka.

  • Tripitaka is a Sanskrit word which means "Triple Basket." The Tripitaka is Buddha's sayings and teachings, as well as for instructions regarding meditation and devotion, and rules for monks.
  • Scriptures of Theravada the oldest branch of Buddhism follow a version of the Tripitaka named Pali Canon.
  • Tripitaka has three traditional divisions:-
  1. Vinaya Pitaka - Discipline, concerns rules and regulations for monks and nuns.
  2. Sutta Pitaka of the teachings and sayings of the Buddha
  3. Abhidhamma Pitaka of commentaries and explanations of Buddhist doctrines.

Jakata:-

  • The Jakatas are a vast body of literature native to South Asia which mostly related to the previous births of Gautama Buddha.
  • The Theravada Jatakas contain 547 poems that are arranged roughly in increasing order of verses.
  • Pali Canon has the oldest and largest collection of Jataka Tales.
  • They are presented there as the record of the Buddha's past lives  found in the Sutta-pitaka  in a portion called the Khuddaka Nikaya.
  • Jataka collections played an important role in the formation and conveying the ideas about Buddhahood, karma and the place of the Buddha in relation to other buddhas and bodhisattvas.
