In India, the rivers are broadly classified as Himalayan Rivers and Peninsular Rivers. himalayan riversare the watercourses that arise from Himalayan ranges and are perennial in nature. On the contrary, peninsular riversare the ones that originate from the Western Ghats and are non-perennial.

Himalayan rivers :
- Perennial in nature .
- Fed by snow and rain .
- Most of them originate from glaciers .
- Have large drainage basins .
- Carry huge amount of silt , sand etc .
- They make guge gorges , waterfalls , meanders etc .
- Eg - Ganga , Brahmaputra , Indus .
Peninsular rivers :
- Seasonal in nature .
- Fed by rain .
- Most of them originate from springs .
- They have small basins.
- They carry less load .
- Eg - Mahanadi , Godaveri etc .
