Xylem ----

i) It helps in movement of water and minerals from roots to the leaves of the plant. This is called Ascent of Sap.
ii) The conducting cells are dead.
iii) There is thick lining of lignin.
iv) It provides mechanical support.

Phloem --

i) It transports prepared food from leaves to different parts of the plant.
ii)  The conducting cells are living.
iii) It doesn't have any lining of lignin.
iv) It doesn't provide any mechanical support

Xylem:

•    Xylem helps in the transport of water and mineral salts from the soil.
•    Xylem consists of xylem vessels, tracheids and fibre.
•    It is unidirectional.
•    It provide mechanical strength to the plant.  

Phloem:                      

•    Phloem helps in the transport of glucose from the leaves.        
•    The phloem consists of fibres, sieve tubes, Phloem parenchyma and companion cells.          
•    It is bidirectional.        
•    It does not provide mechanical strength to the plant.
