We can say anything living when it meets the following conditions :
1) Growth (from inside)
2) Metabolism (Exception : Few metabolic reactions can be demonstrated outside the body)
3) Reproduction (Exceptions : Worker bees..etc)
4) Irritability (Response to environment)
5) Self Consciousness (Exceptions : Coma, brain dead patients).
So, plants, animals, protozoa, bacterial...etc are living organisms.
Things/Objects which do not meet the above criteria are non living.
Examples : Rock, sand...etc.
