Sulphide ores are heated in the presence of oxygen to convert them into their corresponding oxides.
SO2 gas is liberated.

2HgS + 3O2 ---------> 2HgO + 2SO2.

Carbonate ores are heated In the abscence or limited supply of oxygen to convert them into their corresponding oxides.
CO2 gas is liberated.

ZnCO3 ---------> ZnO + CO2.

Hope it helped......

the sulphide ores are converted into oxides by heating strongly in the presence of excess air. this process is known as roasting. the carbonate ores are changed into oxides by heating strongly in limited air. this process is known as calcination.
