1) Primary storage device

2) Secondary storage device

Difference between primary storage device and secondary storage device:

1. Primary memory is the main memory (Hard disk, RAM) where the operating system resides.

2. Secondary memory can be external devices like CD, floppy magnetic discs etc.

Secondary storage cannot be directly accessed by the CPU and is also external memory storage.

A computer uses two kinds of memory storage devices called as the Primary memory and the Secondary memory.

  • Random Access Memory(RAM) and Read Only Memory(ROM) together make up the Primary memory of a computer. RAM is the volatile or temporary memory whereas ROM is related to the computer's boot process and is permanent in nature.
  • Secondary memory storage devices are also called as the external memory devices. These store information on a permanent basis and provide a lot more storage space that the the Primary memory storage devices.
  • Secondary memory storage devices are of three types : Magnetic storage device like the hard drive, Optical storage devices like the CD/DVD and Blu-Ray discs and Flash memory devices like the flash drive.
