Copyright or that matter any type of Intellectual Property Right is a property right granted in favor of the creator.

In this sense piracy can be read as use of such protected property (in this case copyrighted material) with-out expressed or implied permission or authorisation of the author of such work in a manner that is not covered by ‘fair use’ defense.

Therefore piracy of copyright includes (but is not limited to) use of songs, lyrics, book excerpts, logos ( they too can be copyright protected-artistic work/expression), down loading of movies-read bit-torrent or any other way, buying of knock off DVDs or CDs of movies and games so on and so forth.

Even the cheap T-shirts, Jeans and the likes you by from vendors on side walks are direct violation of copyrights and IPRs.

Also bear in mind ‘PIRACY’ in traditional sense is limited to concept of high sea piracy- an act performed by likes of Jack Sparrow and Barbosa but in a much malevolent form. e.g.- high jacking of ships off the cost of Somalia or in strait of Malacca. It involves loss of life as on many occasions sailors on these ill fated ships ‘disappear’. Ships and cargo are sold.

PIRACY whether performed on high seas or over internet or by buying from a friendly vendor are crimes. Such act hurts original creator in case of IPRs lessening incentive to create new works.

Cheap thrills are not good for welfare of creativity and it’s creator.
