Positive displacement machines (reciprocating piston and cylinder) are low speed machine and can only handle smaller flow rates of fluids through it. Vol efficiency is not 100%.
A turbo machine employs dynamic action of rotor which changes the energy level of machine. It runs at higher speeds and can handle larger flow rates. The vol efficiency is 100%.
A reciprocating machine can be made to work isothermally. On the other hand , the high speed turbo machine is an adiabatic machine.
