Ethanol is alcohol whereas ethanoic acid is carboxylic acid. Thus ethanol will not give effervences when treated with NaHCO₃,but ethanoic acid gives effervences of CO₂ when treated with sodium bicarbonate.
Ethanoic acid can turn moist blue litmus red,but ethanol will not respond to moist litmus.
