An atom is smallest particle in an element that has the properties of the element. It is not possible to breakdown the atom further retaining the properties of the element.

Molecules are formed by the combination of two or more atoms. Unlike atoms, molecules can be subdivided to individual atoms. The atoms are bonded together in a molecule.

Hey dear!

ATOMS

The smallest particle of an element that retains the properties of the element is called an atom.

Each element is made up of only one kind of atom. Generally, all atoms of an element are identical although there are some exceptions.

The atoms of an element are different from the atom of any other element. For example, the atoms of oxygen are different from the atoms of nitrogen but all atoms of oxygen are identical and all atoms of nitrogen are identical.

MOLECULE

Two atoms combine to form a molecule.

A molecule is the smallest particle of an element that can exist by itself.

It may contain similar or dissimilar atoms.

▶ The molecule of an element contains one or more atoms of the same kind. They are known as homo molecules.

▶ The molecule of a compound contains two or more atoms of different kinds. They are called hetero molecules.
