Plateau is an elevated plain while mountain is an elevation with steep slope.

Highest plateau of the world is in Tibet and is also known as roof of the world.
Highest mountain peak is The Mount everest.

A  mountain  is  a  natural  elevation  while  a  plteau    is    an  elevated  plain.
The  Tibetan  Plateau  which  is the  highest  plaateau  is  called  the  roof  of  the  world.In  a  mountain  the  climate  is  usually  harsh    so   is  scarcely   populated  while  a  plateau  may  be  well  populated  .Mount  Everest  is  the  highest  mountain  in  the  world.Plateaus  are  rich  reserves  of  minerals.A  mounatain  is  generally  steeper  than  a  hill.A  plateau  may  have  one  or  more  sides  with  a  steep  slope.
