Salt
A salt is a chemical substance formed by nutrilization of an acid with base.It is formed by the replacement of hydrogen atoms of the acid by metal atoms.
Ex - NaOH + HCl ----> NaCl + H2O
Classification of salts
classification based on Chemical formula :-
- Normal Salt : It does not contain any ionizable hydrogen atom or hydroxyl group. This is formed by complete neutralization of an acid by a base.Ex - NaCl , KCl, NaNO3 , etc.
- Acidic Salt : Contain replacable H+ ion. They react with bases.Ex - NaHSO4 , NaHCO3, etc.
- Basic Salt : Contain replacable OH- ion. They react with acids.Ex - PbOHNO3 , CaOHCl , etc.
- Double Salt : Mixture of two or more simple salt in equimolar proportion.Ex - K2SO4 . Al2 (SO4)3.24 H2O , etc.
- Mixed Salt : Salt containing more than one acidic or basic radical.Ex - CaOCl2.
- Complex Salt : One complex and one or more simple ion.Ex - K4{Fe(CN)6}.
Classification on the basis of pH Value
- Neutral Salt Solution : Salt solution formed by strong acid and strong base. Have pH value = 7 , does not change the colour of litmus solution.Ex - NaCl , KCl , K2SO4 , NaNO3 , etc.
- Acidic Salt Solution : Solution of strong acid and weak base. Have pH value <7, turn blue litmus red.Ex - NH4Cl , (NH4)2 SO4 , etc.
- Basic Salt : Solution of strong base and weak acid. Have pH >7 and turn red litmus blue.Ex - Na2CO3 , K3PO4 , etc.
Classification Based on Salt Family
Potassium Salt
KCl , K2CO3 , KNO3 , KMNO4 , etc.
Chloride Salt
NH4Cl , NaCl , MgCl , etc.
Sulphate Salt
Na2SO4 , (NH4)2SO4 , K2SO4 , MgSO4 , etc.
Ammonium Salt
NH4Cl , (NH4)SO4 , etc.
