In this classic demonstration, from the Royal Society of Chemistry, cotton wool soaked in ammonia and hydrochloric acid are placed at either end of a sealed tube. The two gasses diffuse through the tube and when they meet a reaction takes place forming a white solid of ammonium chloride. The relative position of the solid shows the relative masses of the gases.

The resource provides a list of apparatus and chemicals needed for the experiment, together with teaching tips.

Curriculum links include: diffusion of gasses, relative formula mass, particle model, kinetic theory.
