Diffusion is defined as movement of substances along the concentration gradient. This kind of movement is seen in many of the biological systems normally.

Even we get to see the movement of substances against the concentration gradient. This type of movement is also known as "Up Hill" type of movement where ATP acts as the source of energy.

This type of Up-Hill movement is facilitated by the help of Pumps which utilise ATP and transport the molecules from a region of low concentration to a region of high concentration.

The reason why this is required is that :

Let's take an example first :

Whenever we suffer from dehydration , we need to take water , glucose (sugars). Sugars are transported from the lumen of intestine to the enterocytes. This is an example of Active Transport.

So active transport is necessary for maintaining the storage of necessary substances inside a cell . If active transport was absent , it would lead to loss of those substances via Passive transport.
