Diffusion is movement of particles from higher concentration to lower concentration. Diffusion is a very slow process. It would take years to supply the water from roots to leaves (upward). Hence being a slow process diffusion can not be use to supply energy and water(minerals). Therefore plants have specialized processes i.e. transpiration which provides an upward suction pull and mames it easire to transport water, minerals and food.
