✏HUMAN DIGESTIVE SYSTEM..
Digestion involves the breakdown of food into smaller components, until they can be absorbed and assimilated into the body.
Alimentary tract (digestive tract) consists a lot of digestive organs and the associated digestive glands .
✒Mouth - Helps in Ingestion of food.
It consists of
Teeth - It's helps is crushing , chewing , piercing of food particles.
Tongue - It is thick, musculo-sensory organ attached posteriorly to the floor of mouth by a soft ligamentous fold.
Covered by the mucous membrane of thick stratified
squamous epithelium having four types of taste buds.
Its main function is to taste the food. It also helps in
swallowing of food and mucus secretion.
Taste buds present near the tip of the tongue are meant
for knowing the sweet taste, those present laterally taste
the sour substances while those present in the posterior
part of the tongue are meant for bitter taste.
✒Pharynx
Behind the mouth is a chamber where a funnel-shaped common passage of respiratory and digestive
tracts lies. This chamber or region is called pharynx. The food channel continues as oesophagus (food
pipe).
The air passage continues as larynx and trachea (windpipe).
The opening of the larynx is guarded by a muscular flap called epiglottis, which prevents the entry of
food into the wind pipe while swallowing.
✒OESOPHAGUS
Continuing Pharynx
It is a narrow tubular part of alimentary canal that connects pharynx with stomach
It is a straight, collapsible and muscular tube, which passes through the neck, thorax and through the
diaphragm into the stomach.
✒Stomach
The stomach is situated in the upper and left portion of
the abdominal cavity. It is a large, muscular sac-like
structure.
In the inner lining of stomach are embedded a number
of gastric glands that secrete gastric juice into the
cavity of the stomach.
Mucous (Goblet) cells secrete mucin.
Chief cells (Peptic or
zymogenic) secrete enzymes.
Colon
Cells of mucosa are secretory but not absorbtive
The opening of stomach into the intestine has a ring
like muscle, the pyloric sphincter, which acts like a
valve and does not open till the food in the stomach is
fully mixed and churned by muscular contractions of
the stomach wall.
✒Small Intestine
Digestion and absorption of food ocurrs here mainly of nutrients.
✒Large intestine
The large intestine absorbs water from the remaining undigested food matter and remove other wastes through anus.
