- When we change a sentence from direct speech to indirect speech, we have to follow a set of rules required to modify the sentence.
- Parts of speech such as tense, verbs and pronouns should be changed accordingly.
- First, the inverted commas and quotation marks are removed from the sentence. Then, the tense is changed, usually to simple past tense.
- Verbs are also changed to past tense. Universal truths remain in their tense and the verbs are also not changed.
- The pronouns are changed to third person as we are reporting the speaker in our own words.
