Direct iodination of benzene is not possible because the reaction is reversible and the HI so produced in the reaction is a very strong reducing agent which reduces iodobenzene back to benzene.

C₆H₆ + I₂   ⇄  C₆H₅I + HI

Hence this reaction is carried out in presence of strong oxidising agent like iodic acid or nitric acid which oxidizes the HI formed to iodine for the reaction to move forward.

5HI + HIO₃ -------> 3H₂O + 3I₂
