When we change into indirect speech it will become ‘’he told that man is mortal’’. In the given sentence tense of indirect speech will not change because reported speech is related to the universal truth and this truth cannot be changed. Therefore, in direct speech tense will remain in simple present. If direct speech is not about the universal truth, than sentence would become in past and ‘’is’’ will change into ‘’was’’.
