The disadvantage is speed. Narrow gauge railways are normally slower than standard gauge.
There have been companies that have built trains with a wider track gauge than standard (4ft 8 1/2in) but so far nobody has shown any real benefit ()in my view). Russia and Ireland have wide gauges.
It's important not to mix track gauge and loading gauge. The loading gauge defines how big the train can be (width and height). New Zealand uses 3ft 6in track gauge but their loading gauge is very similar to the UK which uses 4ft 8 1/2in track gauge. New Zealand purchased quite a few UK passenger coaches when we decided we no longer needed them, put new 3ft 6in bogies under them and ran them in the area around Auckland and also around Wellington.
