Disadvantages of self studies?

The problem with being self taught is that your professor is no smarter and no more knowledgeable than you are.
Instructors and mentors are useful because:
They have knowledge and perspective. They are further down the road than you are, so are more likely to know what's ahead.
They can help steer you away from dead ends and diversions. When you have a problem that you can't figure out, they can provide guidance that enables you to make progress.
They usually have resources like references and social networks which can help you learn more quickly.
When you are self-studying, you may not have any of that. But don't let that make you think that self-study is worthless. If you don't have a mentor, you can still learn new skills. It just takes a bit more effort.
Hints:
Read and practice. Find the standard references, read them, and try to understand them. Test your understanding by trying to figure out how to apply what you've learned.
If you are asking this question on Quora, you already have the capability to find others who can either serve as mentors, or at least buddies who are on the same path as you. If there are no online communities which are surrounding what you are trying to learn, then form one yourself.
If you don't understand something right away, don't fret. Move on to something else, even for a little while. Often when you come back to something later, a little rest will make the answer more obvious. If the problem is difficult, it might mean that you need to gain more knowledge before you can tackle it. The only true way to make no progress is to allow frustration and impatience to cause you to quit.
