disadvantages of the matrilineal system of inheritance

Answer:
I think that would heavily depend on the social norms of that country. Let's use my home country of the US as an example.
If we started this as of today, it would be very difficult to trace your heritage. Women can change or extend their name with each marriage, making maiden names difficult to trace in the best of times, and impossible depending on region and nationality. I have a great great great grandmother whose first name indicates Russian or eurasian decent, however her last not was not documented when she immigrated/married into my clan.
Early immigration is another hump to get over. Many names were written based on pronunciation, thus lt is likely that hundreds of thousands of surnames were changed upon immigration to the us. One could also speculate that because peoples of similar or same nationalities tend to live in homogeneous, tight communities means that there is a higher chance for inbreeding as the generations lose their original identity.
As far is benefits, I dont think it's really any better or worse if it were to start at the beginning of a country's life. The disadvantage to starting it now is that you have to work through your countries history, and potential a few others, to trace your heritage with ever changing last names.
