Discovery of The Cell

An English botanist Robot Hooks in 1655 examined the slices of a dried section of cork under a microscope. He observed small chambers in the Slice of cork. These cambus appeared to be like those present in a honeycomb. Therefore, he named this structure as honeycomb structure. Hooke then called this small chambers cells. In 1839, the German botanist Matthias Jacob Schleiden and the German psychologist Theodor Schwann, together proposed the cell theory. The cell theory comprises of the following postulates :

1. All the living organisms are composed of cells. It is the basic structural and functional unit of life.

2. All the cells are produced by the division of pre-existing cells. This phenomenon is called reproduction of cells, i.e., new cells are formed from the old cells.

3. All the basic chemical and physiological functions like growth, repair, movement, immunity, digestion, respiration, etc are carried out by cells.

4. The structure of all the living organisms is determined by the organisation of these small unit called cells.
