:The first nationalistic revolutionary movement for Indian independence emerged from Bengal. It later took root in the newly formed Indian National Congress with prominent moderate leaders seeking only their fundamental right to appear for Indian Civil Service examinations in British India, as well as more rights (economical in nature), for the people of the soil. The early part of the 20th century saw a more radical approach towards political self-rule proposed by leaders such as the Lal, Bal, Pal triumvirate, and Aurobindo Ghosh, V. O. Chidambaram Pillai.

Revolt of 1857 is called the first war of independence as:

It made an impact on a significant part of our country, but not the entire Indian subcontinent. For example: Entire South India region was not at all impacted by the revolt. Certain large princely states such as Kashmir and Mysore were neutral.

In a way, it would also to be a misnomer to call it “First”. Because in Indian history, revolts were initiated earlier as well such as in 1829 (much earlier than 1857), Tirot Sing, raised a revolt in northeast region against colonialism of Khasi hills.

Probably, it is called first independence war because of active participation of masses like workers and farmers. Surely, It was the first war of masses against colonialism at a large scale.
