water has an unusual property called anomalous expansion. unlike other liquids, water on cooling first contracts in volume till 4°C and on further cooling it expands till 0°C.so,it has maximum density at 4°C.
it's practical importance can be seen in cold regions where ice forms a blanket over lakes which help the marine animals to live.

ANOMALOUS EXPANSION OF WATER:
- Usually on cooling below 4°C, majority of liquids undergo contraction and reduce in net volume.
- However, this does not apply for water.
- This is because, upon cooling below 4°C, water paradoxically undergoes expansion and increases its volume.
- This is attributed to the max density of water at 4°C.
PRACTICAL USES :
- This anomalous property of water is necessary for sustaining of aquatic flora and fauna in cold regions and during winters when the top player of water bodies (e.g. lakes, pools) freeze.
Hope It Helps.
