Answer

A theory of superconductivity formulated by John Bardeen, Leon Cooper, and Robert Schrieffer. It explains the phenomenon in which a current of electron pairs flows without resistance in certain materials at low temperatures. ... It is this weak, indirect attraction that binds the electrons together, into a Cooper pair.

Explanation of BCS theory of Superconductivity:-

  • This theory was proposed to  explain the phenomenon of Superconductivity.
  • It was given by three scientist  Bardeen ,Cooper  and Schrieffer and so it is named as BCS theory
  • This theory explains superconductivity on basis of two phenomenons which are:-
  1. Electron-Phonon-Electron Interaction:-            When an electron passes through the lattice, it interacts with the positive ions and as a result lattice gets distorted and a region of high positive charge density is created which is called phonon. When another electron passes nearby to it get attracted and this is known as the electron -phonon-electron interaction.
  2. Cooper Pair:-         when the two electrons interact with each other through phonon attractively and overcome the coulombic repulsive between them is known as the Cooper pair.
