Heya mate,
_______________
DEFINE DAM'S
A dam is a barrier that store water. It is constructed across the rivers to store flowing water. Water stored in dams can be utilized for irrigation, domestic purposes, hydropower etc.
.DESCRIBE TYPES OF DAMS?
●BASED ON MATERIAL OF CONSTRUCTION
RIGID DAM
It is constructed with rigid material such as stone, masonry, concrete, steel or timber. Steel and Timber dams are usually constructed for small heights.Amongst concrete dam, there are many varieties: Gravity dam, Buttress dams and Arch dams etc.
NON-RIGID DAM (EMBANKMENT DAMS)
Earthen dam – They are constructed by compacting successive layers of following materials: gravel, sand, silt, clay etc.The spillway section is made with a concrete and stone masonry.
Tailings dam – They are constructed from waste or refuse obtained from mines
Rockfill dam –It is built of rock fragments and boulders of large size. They are also made with combination of rockfill and earthfill , called rockfill composite dam.
●BASED ON STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOUR
GRAVITY DAM-It is a massive sized dam fabricated from concrete or stone masonry. It entirely depends on its own mass for stability. This is why it is called a gravity dam.
ARCH DAM-It is a curved masonry or concrete dam, convex upstream, which helps in transferring the pressure or force of water to the abutments.
BUTTRESS DAM-This type of dams consist is supported by series of buttress walls. Buttress means a support that transmits a force from a roof or wall to another supporting structure.
EMBANKMENT DAM-It is a non-rigid dam which resists the forces acting on it by its shear strength and to some extent also by its own weight (gravity) but different from gravity dam in structural way.
