Hey Friend,
Fertilization is the process of fusion of male gamete or sperm and the female gamete or ovum to form zygote.
When the sperms are released, they travel up to the fallopian tube where one of the sperms penetrate the wall of the ovum by secreting certain enzymes from the acrosome. When one sperm enters the egg, the egg membrane swells up and becomes impermeable and no other sperm can get in.
This fusion of sperm and egg marks the completion of fertilization. As this zygote descends down the oviduct, it multiplies to form blastocyst, then after implantation it forms embryo, foetus and finally a baby!
Following are the main events taking place from fertilization to birth -
1. Egg is released from ovary.
2. Deposition of sperms.
3. Fusion of sperm and egg takes place, fertilization occurs.
4. Due to repeated division, blastocyst is formed in early embryonic stage.
5. Blastocyst attaches itself to the uterine wall, implantation takes place.
6. A pea sized embryo is formed.
7. Foetus is formed.
8. Birth takes place.
Hope it helps!
