Answer:

In such media the cells tend to take up water by osmosis. The cell swells, building up pressure against the cell wall. The wall exerts an equal pressure against the swollen cell. Because of their walls, such cells can withstand much greater changes in the surrounding medium than animal cells.

Cell wall in plant cells help them to survive in changing surrounding medium:

But how?

  • First of all, cell wall are outermost covering of the cell envelope containing pectin, lignin and hemi-cellulose.

  • The cell wall is a mainly responsible for maintaining the rigidity of the plant cell and to maintain its shape.

  • Also, they help plants to survive. Whenever plant cells are placed in hypotonic solutions, fluids (water) tend to undergo diffusion and accumulate within the cell. This provides a lot of turgor pressure. Cell wall balances the pressure and prevents cell lysis.

  • In case of hypertonic solution, plant cell cytoplasm undergoes plasmolysis. But still, the cell wall retains the net structure of the cell.

That's how plant cell wall help survive the cell.
