The population of France rose rapidly during 1715 and 1789. This led to increase in demand of food grains. The production of grains could not keep pace with the increasing demand. So the price of bread rose rapidly. Most workers were employed as labourers in workshops and the wages did not keep pace with the rise in the prices. So the gap between the rich and teh poor widened. Things became worse during drought and hail. This led to a subsistence crisis in the old regime. People were not able to meet their basic livelihoods.
