Farmers and even gardeners need to follow certain steps or undertake certain activities to cultivate and produce plants. All steps or activities undertaken by farmers to grow and cultivate crops are called agricultural practices.

The main steps involved in crop production are:

Preparation of soil

Selection and sowing of seeds

Addition of manure and fertilisers

Irrigation

Protection from weeds and pests

Harvesting

★ Preparation of Soil :-

• Soil contains nutrients minerals, air and water necessary for plant growth.

• It needs to be adequately and correctly prepared before sowing the seeds.

Ploughing and tilling the soil

Levelling the soil

★ Ploughing and Tilling the Soil :

• Ploughing and Tilling is a mechanical processes by which soil is prepared to the desired physical condition for planting.

• Tilling and ploughing turn the soil, lossen it and increases its fertility.

• Loose soil is porous well aerated and holds more water.

• Roots of plant can penetrate deep into the loose soil and breathe easily in it.

• Humus and nutrients present in the lower layers is brought to the top layers of soil during tilling and ploughing.

★ Levelling the soil:

• The agricultural field may not be even after tilling and ploughing.

• Big pieces of soil called crumbs may be present on the field.

• These crumbs need to be broken before sowing the seeds.

• The crumbs are broken and the soil is evened out using the process of levelling.

• An instrument called leveller or cultivator is used to level the soil and even it out.
