Motivation has several effects on students' learning and behavior. Motivation also leads to increased effort and energy. Motivation determines whether a student will pursue a task (even a difficult one) with enthusiasm or a lackluster attitude. Motivation increases the initiation and persistence of activities.

Teachers have a very significant, lifelong impact on all of their students. This impact involves not only the teaching of particular academic skills, but as importantly, the fostering of student self-esteem. Reinforcing self-esteem in the classroom is associated with increased motivation and learning.

Beyond their own stress, teachers' inability to cope with stressful situations in the classroom, or inactive behavior, may affect their capacity to manage student misbehavior. Teacher behavior can also have a negative influence on students' socio-emotional development.
