Thomas Hunt Morgan is considered to be the father of experimental genetics. Morgan and Sturtevant were pioneers in experimental genetics. They established the concept of linkage and crossing over.

Tendency of linked genes on the same chromosome to retain together is called linkage. Such genes are called linked genes. Linked genes represent only parental types.

The two developed the technique of chromosome mapping. Sturtevant suggested that if genes are linearly arranged, the distances between them should be additive. Based on this, he proposed the map of these genes.
