Mineral Wealth of J&K

Kashmir was once a collection of images-a son et lumiere that told the story of the love of the Mughals for this Paradise Vale. The state is known for its scenic beauty, magnificent lakes, and snow-clad mountains, green pastures and above all, wonderful tourist resorts. It is also rich in natural resources, which include minerals. The state is so rich in its mineral wealth that if exploited to its fullest extent, it can get economic revolution, which can entirely change the fate of the people of this valley. Although the government of Jammu & Kashmir is making numerous endeavors to exploit and extract its mineral wealth, yet a lot more needs to be done in this direction to usher the state in an unbelievably independent state of economics.

Alphabetically, the state is absolutely rich in the following minerals- arsenic ores, bauxite, borax, coal, gold, gypsum, lignite, limestone, manganese, marble, and sapphire. Let me give a brief survey of these precious minerals:

Arsenic Ores: This mineral is known to exist in Ladakh. The mineral is used in medicines in the form of an ore known as arpoinent, a form of which can be extracted from these places, which need proper exploitation.

Bauxite: It is significant aluminum metal, which is used in the manufacture of utensils and refractory bricks. Millions of tones of this mineral can be found in Jammu.

Borax: This mineral is used in boric acid and other medicines. It is found in Sokar Lake in Ladakh and experts have revealed that tones of borax are annually deposited in this lake, which needs attention.

Coal: It is a valuable fuel and industrial mineral and is found in the form of anthracite and bituminous coal. Rich deposits of coal can be found in Rajouri district, where a thermal power plant has been set up to use coal wealth of the valley to generate power.

Gold: It is present on the banks of Indus River in the form of alluvial gold. It needs honeycomb to yield results and falls under Ladakh area.

Gypsum: It is extensively used in the cement industry, dentistry, sculpture, and in the manufacture of sulphuric acid. This is derived from a sedimentary rock consisting of mainly anhydrous calcium sulphate. Quality gypsum exists in Jammu area.

Lignite: As per scientific research years ago, forests and vegetables matter was buried underground, which, due to heat, underwent a metamorphosis change into lignite and in the second stage in the formation of coal. This lignite is a low quality fuel and has been reported from Handwara region in millions of tones, as well as in Jammu region.

Limestone: It is a carbonate rock of sedimentary origin, which caps most of the exquisite hill-rocks surrounding Anantnag, Pulwama, Baramulla and Ladakh districts. Limestone is the primary material from which CaCO3, calcium carbides, lime and Portland cement are manufactured. The well-known sites in the valley are Verinag, Mattan, Achabal, Shopian, and Khalsi in Ladakh.

Magnesite: It is mostly composed of MgCO3, which is used in the manufacture of glass. Millions of tones of Magnesite are found in Anantnag.

Marble: This is a carbonate rock, which originates from the metamorphosis of limestone over a long period of tie. Marble, used for decorations and buildings, has substantial market. Excavated from the marble mines situated at Kupwara, this marble is of high quality and possesses variety of shaded and color.

Sapphire: It is a gemstone, a precious one, found in Kistwar, Kashmir. Sapphire is famous throughout the world for its wonderful shades and variety.

It would, however, be proper to say that mineral reserves of Kashmir are not too large in view of the growing demand of minerals all over the world. It is, therefore, necessary for us to use our mineral wealth judiciously, avoiding wasteful consumption at every level. We must remember that minerals, unlike agriculture and waterpower, are non-replenishable resources. The valley must employ new methods of location and exploiting its mineral deposits. In this process, our state should not meet the same fate as all other countries of the world. Conservation of our mineral wealth is of great significance in view of the growing demand for minerals. Our desire to raise the living standards has some far-reaching effects on the environment. Growing urbanization has led us to adopt certain shortsighted policies, resulting in the deterioration of the environment, especially in India. The minerals are non-renewable resources and are estimated to be used up within 50 years. Our overall relation with the natural environment also needs to be carefully looked into. All these aspects need to be viewed from a wider perspective.
