The story, 'The Storyteller' works on the background of the story and scene of a railway carriage that was one of the commonly used and prominent modes of transportation during the late 19th century where the people are seen traveling by the railways.

Rabindranath Tagore presents the post master's role in the narration. The postmaster is shown to have a streak of carrying a dual personality and to an extent is duplicate in a crude form where he behaves indifferently to Ali and his situation until and unless he steps into the same shoes and has to face similar situations.

As he suffers the pain of separation from his daughter, he loses his sense of indifference and rather feels sympathetic towards Ali and can relate to the pain and sufferings. His brief pain of a mere one day brings him too close to the long pain and wait of Ali for 45 years.

He is seen regretting and feeling guilt for his repenting insensitive response and indifferent behavior towards Ali. As a postmaster, receiving Ali's daughter's letter makes him happy and he feels personally attached and decides to hand over the same to Ali personally. So the story sees a shift in the character of the postmaster from being an indifferent and insensitive person to an empathetic and sensitive person.
