The state of Medieval India was neither fully Theocratic nor non-religious or secular. Mohammad Habib says, “It was not a theocratic state in any sense of the word” and that “its foundation was, nevertheless, non-religious and secular.”All the activities and functions were not carried out according to the Islamic Law or Sharia.
The State of medieval India was a military state. The king maintained a large standing army for maintenance of law and order and protection of Kingdom.
The Sovereignty was vested in God. The king was the representative of God on earth and owes his allegiance to the Caliph--the leader of entire Muslim community. The King was the source of all powers and functions of the state.
