The Ahoms introduced an administrative system which was quite new to the people of this land. It was a form of government of hereditary monarchy with a council of ministers and a great council of nobles and officers of the state to give general guidance to the king in all matters of major importance to the state.

They migrated from the present-day Myanmar to the Brahmaputra valley in the 13th century. They suppressed the older political system of the bhuiyans (landlords) and created a new state. They annexed the following kingdoms and subjugated many other tribes during the sixteenth century: Chhutiyas in 1523.
