as when modern period is equals to colonial period was going on then Siraj Ud daulah was the Nawab of Bengal he said to the British to remove all its fortifications from Calcutta and as you know Madras Bengal Mumbai were the three presidencies of our India at that time and Bengal is near Calcutta then from this it is clear that Calcutta was an important town in the history of our India

- there were many reason for the britishers to develop calcutta.subsequently in 1757 when sirajuddaulah was defeated in the battle of plassey the east india company decided to build such a fort which could not be easily attacked.the company chose site in the southernmost village of govindapur to build fort william.once the british became more confident about their permanent settlement in calcutta,they started large scale construction of houses,buildings and colonies.this is how calcutta was urbanised
