After his defeat in the Third Anglo-Mysore War, Tipu
Sultan wanted to make Mysore more powerful than before. For this, he formed allies with various
countries including France. Tippu’s close relationship with Napoleon Bonaparte
was a cause of concern for the British. As a result, Lord Wellesley asked him
to form an alliance with the British which was rejected. This made Wellesley
call for a battle against Tipu Sultan to see his end. With the support of the
Nizam of Hyderabad and Marathas, Lord Wellesley had about double the number of
soldiers than Tipu Sultan. This was one of the major reasons for Tipu Sultan to
lose the battle.
