After India got independence, it was decided that the tribal people would also be involved in all the matters of the country and different approaches were being started.

However, due to the displacement of tribes from their traditional habitats for construction of National parks, industries, mining operations, construction of roads and dams etc. created trauma for them while leaving their traditional land which was their main source of livelihood.

Almost 85.39 lakh tribals were displaced until 1990 for reservation of forests as National parks.

In 1934, Verrier Elwin had supported the establishment of 'National parks', also called as 'specimens in a human Zoo' of the tribals. He had advised that their contact should be reduced to the outside world to the minimum. However, this approach was not followed for a long time.

Therefore, a National Policy for Tribals was created which stipulated the tribals should have minimum displacement only in cases where non-displacement is not possible. The 9th 5-Year plan has drawn a lot of attention for the national policy towards the development of tribal culture.
